Wednesday, February 18, 2026 The European Society for Medical Oncology has updated its clinical practice guidelines to formally recommend integrating structured exercise into the standard of care for patients following their colon cancer treatment. This change is the direct result of the 17 year CCTG CO21 CHALLENGE trial that showed that guided exercise can improve survival rates and reduce cancer recurrence. It’s a major step forward as researchers Dr Chris Booth and Dr Kerry Courneya continue to work with Canadian and International health authorities to adopt similar guidelines. This continued advocacy means more doctors will understand that exercise should be part of routine treatment, and more patients can benefit.ESMO CPG update:The update addresses the adoption of physical exercise in patients with localised colon cancer.Recommendations are given for the participation of eligible patients in structured exercise programmes. An ESMO-MCBS score is provided to describe the level of evidence for physical exercise adoption. An updated algorithm for the adjuvant treatment of localised stage II and stage III colon cancer is provided.Recommendations are based on available scientific data and the authors’ collective expert opinion.See the full ESMO Clinical Practice Update >
