 ID.me important update

IMPORTANT UPDATE

NCI has partnered with ID.me to incorporate required identity verification (IP) and multifactor authentication (MFA) into CTEP systems access. These security features previously required two elements: 1) stringent identity verification evidence (passport, driver's license, personal identifiers, etc.) and 2) a personal phone number for access management. Since partnering with ID.me, NCI has gained insightful feedback from international research communities voicing concern and reluctance to share the information necessary for U.S. federal and ID.me's identity proofing requirements. Due to these concerns, NCI is implementing an alternative approach to identity verification and MFA. The new IP/MFA methods vary based on a user's country of residence. By implementing alternative IP and MFA options, NCI aims to significantly enhance IT security without causing unnecessary disruption to your continued support of the NCI clinical research program.

The rollout of these changes has begun, and an alternative streamlined IP/ MFA approach for international users will soon be established. With this change, Canadian and International research staff & investigators will NOT be required to provide any personal information above and beyond what has traditionally been provided to the NCI (ex., Name, DOB, contact info, etc.). Provision of documentation, such as a passport or driver's license, will NO LONGER be required for identity proofing. Instead, this user base will have their identity verified in person at the site administration level. International research staff will still be required to set up MFA with ID.me. NCI is currently working to implement such methods to allow users to onboard with ID.me for MFA options only and forgo the identity verification process that requires personal information. This integration should be available in early summer; more details on this update will follow in the upcoming months.

In the meantime, non-U.S. users can bypass ID.me onboarding for continued participation in NCI trials. Users needing CTEP-IAM access can submit an account request through the IAM application. Afterward, users can request account activation and access with CTEP-IAM credentials and password by emailing ctephelpdesk@nih.gov. The CTEP help desk will support your account access and user needs so all research staff can continue their much-appreciated participation in the NCI research network.
